History of the Contest
Started in 2011, the Richton Park Public Library District holds an annual
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Contest and Celebration in January. Educators from
school districts 159, 162, 227, and Southland College Prep are notified to
encourage students grades PreK-12th to enter the contest.
In 2011, there were 268 entries and in 2012, there were 338 entries! The students
and parents are then invited to the MLK Celebration Reception where the winners
are announced to receive almost $400 in prizes donated by the
Friends of the Richton Park Library.
Influencial community leaders from the Library, Mayor's Office, Community Center,
School Districts, Township, Local Businesses and Organizations are also invited to
come out and offer words of inspiration to the students. Also, student talent such as
school bands, choirs, music groups, drama clubs, dance groups, stepper groups,
and cheerleaders are invited to perform their special talent at the MLK Reception.
Attendees have the opportunity to meet FLAVA (Family of Local Authors,
Visionaries and Authors) participants who express themselves through art, song,
spoken word, poetry, martial arts and of course, writing books. Many students have
been fortunate enough to meet these talented people and win
books autographed by the authors.
We hope to see all of our talented youth participate in the contest this year!
